Staten Island Deserves A Cleaner Waterfront!

Check out our mail piece by clicking aboveCheck out our mail piece by clicking aboveWe live on an island in one of the most spectacular harbors in the world, but in most places we can't get to the waterfront.

And even if we could, it isn't clean.

Elected Officials and candidates for office need to hear that they should do something to improve the quality of life in our community - especially when it comes to clean water and opening up Staten Island's waterfront for Staten Islanders to enjoy.

NYLCVEF partnered with the Natural Resources Protective Association (NRPA) to raise this issue in the February 2009 special election for New York City Council.  Our program sought to educate voters in Staten Island about the role their next Council Member could play in solving the lack of access to a clean waterfront and engage them to vote for the candidate they felt had the best plan.

Candidates completed surveys detailing their positions and attended a public candidate forum.  Voters received an educational mail piece and a phone survey asking them to indicate that the issue of waterfront access and water quality would affect the way they voted.  On February 24th, voters went to the polls and our six week campaign came to a close with over 1,000 people signing on to the program.

We encourage everyone to stay active advocating for a cleaner more accessible waterfront.  Here's what you can do:
