Astoria Energy is a new electric generating facility to be located in Astoria, Queens, New York. Once completed, Astoria Energy will be New York City’s largest new power plant in more than 25 years. New facilities are of critical importance to the City, which has insufficient local generation capacity and transmission constraints into and within the city limits. Experts agree that adding new generation, in addition to expanding and retrofitting existing facilities, is essential to keeping the lights on in New York City. Astoria Energy will use state-of-the-art, natural gas fueled, combined cycle technology to produce 1,000 megawatts of power – enough to supply one million customers. Construction of the first 500 megawatts has been initiated, with commercial operation projected for spring 2006. Astoria Energy is a new entrant to the market, increasing competition to drive down the cost of electricity to consumers.
