Blueprint For A Greener East End

NEW YORK --- From its sweeping coastline to its rich agricultural areas and the pristine Pine Barrens, the East End is home to some of Long Island's most important natural treasures. But the East End also faces significant sustainability challenges that put those natural resources at risk.

The Blueprint lays out detailed policy recommendations for the towns of East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton and Southold that will help them become more environmentally sustainable while allowing for economic growth.

"The federal government can't seem to get its act together on climate change and clean energy, but that doesn't mean the East End should wait. In fact, local action on the environment has the potential to drive innovation and move the national debate forward," said Marcia Bystryn, president of the New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund. "Our Blueprint for a Greener East End creates a framework that will lead to a more sustainable future for the East End while also protecting its economy and high quality of life."

NYLCVEF's Blueprint for a Greener East End focuses on five related policy areas: smart growth, sustainable agriculture, water quality & aquifer protection, energy efficiency & renewables, and natural resource protection.

By adopting the detailed recommendations in each of these areas, the five East End towns can develop comprehensive strategies that preserve their communities and their natural resources without compromising economic development.
