Water SupplyWater Supply 

The Department of Public Works is responsible for the supervision of all county roadways and the design and construction of county facilities, sewage systems, water systems, and garbage and waste collection systems. It is also responsible for regional transportation planning and developing a model for protecting Nassau’s groundwater.

The Division of Sanitation and Water Supply is responsible for the operation of the county’s three waste-water treatment plants and sewer maintenance. Its Water Supply Unit monitors waste quality and quantity. Its Hazardous Waste Unit handles hazardous waste issues on county-owned land and facilities, such as a spill on a county road.

The Division of Highways and Bridge Maintenance is responsible for county roads, stream maintenance, mosquito control, tree replacement, and recharge basin control. (There are 600 basins in the county that collect stormwater runoff and recharge it into the ground).

The Division of Highways and General Engineering is responsible for county highway design.

The Division of Building Design and Construction is responsible for improvements to and new construction of county-owned facilities. It is also responsible for asbestos abatement.
