The county owns three sewage treatment plants:  Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in Wantagh, Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant, and Inwood Sewage Treatment Plant.  All have been identified as sources of nitrogen loading into coastal waters.  The Long Island Comprehensive Conservation Management Plan recommends that these plants rapidly upgrade to tertiary treatment in order to decrease nitrogen. Aerial ViewAerial View Most waste-water treatment facilities in Nassau County provide only primary or secondary treatment.  Tertiary treatment would ensure healthier waters that would be safe for recreation and fisheries.

There are nine locally run sewage treatment plants in Nassau County.  They are in Lawrence, Long Beach, Oyster Bay, Great Neck, West Long Beach, Glen Cove, Port Washington, Cedarhurst, and Locust Valley.
