A citizen activist group concerned with the study and conservation of marine life. Audubon Society There are three local chapters of the National Society, it is an environmental advocacy group whose mission is to effect public policy for the environment, especially on wildlife and wildlife habitat. North Shore Audubon Society Huntington Audubon Society Citizens Campaign for the Environment A statewide not-for-profit environmental advocacy organization working for the protection and sound management of land and water resources. Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor A volunteer organization dedicated to protecting the Hempstead Harbor area from further pollution and environmental risk by working towards eliminating such threats and suggesting alternatives. Concerned Citizens for 25A Concerned about the threat to the fresh and salt-water wetlands along Route 25A, this group’s Sounding Committee is developing alternative plans for the maintenance of a stretch of the highway that extends from Cold Spring Harbor into Huntington. 1 in 9: The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition A grassroots advocacy group interested in finding a prevention and a cure for cancer through environmental advocacy, education, outreach, legislation and research. Friends of the Bay (Oyster) Representing nearly 3500 area residents and businesses, Friends of the Bay promotes community awareness of the need to preserve water quality and marine life in the Bay. It also plays a leading role in development of plans for the management and protection of Oyster Bay ecosystems and coordinates many citizen involvement activities. Friends of the Bay publishes “Baywatch,” an online newsletter. Friends of Massapequa Preserve 90 Pennsylvania Avenue, 2nd Floor Massapequa Preserve is 423 undeveloped acres of woodlands, ponds, lakes and freshwater wetlands that borders Massapequa Creek for almost 4 miles, from South Farmingdale to Merrick Road. The Preserve is home to hundreds of species of plants and animals. Originally part of the N.Y. City water supply property, the Preserve was acquired by Nassau County in 1981. Massapequa Preserve is managed by the Nassau County Department of Recreation and Parks, and is the largest passive use park in the County. Among the many activities permitted in the preserve are walking, hiking, jogging, rollerblading, biking, fishing, bird-watching and photography. League of Women Voters of Nassau County PO Box 526 A non-partisan political organization that seeks to make women’s issues, including environmental and other local issues, a top priority for elected officials, political candidates, and voters. Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference A hiking and conservation organization dedicated to preserving, maintaining and developing trails and green space on Long Island. Long Island Neighborhood Network (LINN) The Neighborhood Network is a non-profit, non-partisan lobby group which advocates the public’s interest on environmental, taxpayer, open government and consumer issues. LINN’s lobbying efforts on the county and state levels are responsible for passage of state pesticide legislation and the inclusion of a Master Plan provision in the County Charter. LINN’s educational affiliate, The Neighborhood Network Research Center, performs research, educational, and public information activities. LINN sponsors the Nassau HUB Citizens Advisory Committee. Long Island Progressive Coalition (LIPC) An affiliate of Citizen Action of New York, LIPC organizes Long Island citizens on a variety of environmental issues including energy, hazardous waste, Long Island Sound protection and water quality as well as labor, welfare reform and other civic issues. It works regularly with the Research and Education Project of Long Island, an education and community outreach group. Marine Sciences Research Center A SUNY statewide institute for marine sciences graduate education, research, and public outreach. NLT is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation that accepts donations of land and conservation easements. We believe firmly in providing creative options to landowners that respect their rights and goals. We also seek to educate government officials, planners, real estate brokers, and others about the tools of land conservation.
The Long Island Chapter of the New York League of Conservation Voters was formed in 1998 to address the serious environmental issues faced by Nassau and Suffolk counties. The Long Island Chapter tackles environmental issues in both counties, serving on task forces and coalitions, and working with businesses, community groups, and government officials at all levels to conserve Long Island's dwindling natural resources. North Shore Land Alliance, Inc. (NSLA) The North Shore Land Alliance, Inc. (NSLA) is a year old land trust with a 501c3 status. Residents For A More Beautiful Port Washington This not-for-profit corporation is composed of Port Washington residents working for an environmentally sound Port Washington. Sierra Club – Long Island Group A local chapter of the national Sierra Club, a nation-wide organization dedicated to conservation and wildlife issues. Soundkeeper Fund An organization committed to the preservation of the Long Island Sound Region Sustainable Energy Alliance of Long Island The Sustainable Energy Alliance is a coalition of environmental, health, and civic organizations that works with Long Island constituents, all levels of government, LIPA and Keyspan for both a sustainable and healthy energy plan. Udalls Cove Preservation Committee A conservation group particularly concerned with a local wetland/marsh, Udalls Cove. |
