Garbage DisposalFiled Under: Environmental Issues | Westchester | Solid WasteCharles Point Resource Recovery Facility in Peekskill is an incinerator that accepts garbage from 36 communities, comprising 90% of the population of Westchester County. The plant allocates excess capacity to private carters. Nine municipalities have their solid waste carted out of the County. In 2002, approximately 666,025 tons of garbage was delivered to the Charles Point facility, less than the permitted 686,250 tons of garbage per year. Charles Point has recently renovated the facility in order to adhere to new clean air standards. The Charles Point incinerator sells energy to Consolidated Edison for two to three cents per kilowatt hour. Incinerator ash is trucked to the County’s Sprout Brook landfill in Cortlandt Manor for disposal. While it was initially assumed that the ash would be a marketable product, a federal ruling that incinerator ash may be hazardous prevented its reuse. |
