There are approximately 6,500 acres in the Nassau County Parks system. The Department of Recreation and Parks has supervision and control of the construction, maintenance, repair, and operation of all parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, campgrounds, museums, and recreation centers.  The department manages 19 parks, including two beaches and five nature preserves.  In the mid-1990s the department suffered dramatic cuts in personnel from which it has not recovered.
