Energy Conservation & Climate Action

The impact of human actions on the global climate is now past debate. New evidence of a warming climate emerges with regularity, and the effects of these changes are potentially catastrophic. But there are steps that the Town of Brookhaven can take now that will ease energy demand, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lead to permanent taxpayer savings.

NYLCVEF urges the Town Board to:

  • Change the town zoning regulations to allow solar panel systems and accessory wind turbines as a supplemental source of power for properties across the town. For wind turbines, the town should establish a simple permit application procedure signed by an architect or professional engineer requiring reasonable side and rear setback limits, safe height limits, and compliance with New York State building, electrical and mechanical codes.
  • Require a 15% goal for town energy reduction and launch a study of the town government's carbon footprint.
  • Implement legislation requiring the town to purchase only Energy-Starrated equipment.
