New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (NYLCVEF) released its 2007 Sustainability Agenda for New York City -- an action agenda that could help the city begin to advance its new "PlaNYC 2030" sustainability initiative.

Mayor Bloomberg's new plan aims to set the city on the right course to absorb the addition of one million new residents that is expected by 2030. The city's ambitious agenda includes fighting against climate change, scaling up the energy infrastructure, adding transit capacity, creating more parks, and improving the city's air quality.

"Mayor Bloomberg is leading the way on local action to combat some of the biggest environmental challenges facing New York. His goals are exactly right, but to make them happen it is vital for the city to begin today. The 2007 Sustainability Agenda for New York City can, and we believe should, be achieved over the next twelve months to advance the mayor's 2030 plan," said NYLCVEF Executive Director Marcia Bystryn.

The agenda details over 40 action steps that reflect input from environmental, public health, environmental justice, and transportation groups. These actions involve issuing regulations for existing legislation, such as the air quality bills of 2005; the implementation of approved plans, such as the solid waste management plan; and building on past successes, such as the green markets.
